Welcome to my moblog!

Welcome to "Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost," my new moblog. The blog's title is taken from the Lord of the Rings, specifically the poem that Bilbo wrote about Aragorn:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Admittedly, I'm not the long-lost heir to any throne (so far as I know!), nor do I have a powerful broken sword in my possession, so the poem in its entirety isn't all that applicable. :) But I recently saw the line about "all those who wander" on a bumper sticker (albeit with the word "those" missing), and it struck me that it'd be a pretty good title for a blog devoted to moblogging -- that is, to posting little mini-updates via cell phone, often from a variety of locations while traveling and otherwise "wandering."

In writing this post, of course, I'm cheating; this is not a cell-phone update at all, but rather, a full-length post that I'm composing in Blogger's regular interface. But that won't be the norm here. This post is just for introductory purposes. Generally, the only posts you'll see here on my moblog will be cell-phone updates, usually containing a photo, or sometimes perhaps a video or audio clip.

Unlike my weekly blog, this blog won't operate on any sort of schedule. Sometimes, I might publish a dozen posts in a day; other times, the blog might be inactive for a month. It'll just depend on whether and when the moblogging mood strikes.

Naturally, this blog will be the place to turn if I'm ever caught up in the midst of some breaking-news event, like the time I was in New York during the Blackout of 2003. (Original posts here, though the links are broken now.) If that ever happens, I will probably post a quick update to the weekly blog too, telling readers to head over here to the moblog.

Likewise, if I have the opportunity to "liveblog" a more scheduled breaking-news event, such as the iPhone's debut -- or, say, the Democratic National Convention in August, for example -- I'll do so here, and will give y'all as much advance warning as possible.

I might even occasionally cheat and, if my schedule allows, do things like liveblog election-night results from the comfort of my home computer, here on the moblog. But I'll have to keep that sort of thing strictly limited, lest this blog simply become Irish Trojan III. ;)

But this is all really speculation; we'll find out together, in time, how this thing evolves. As long as I've had a blog, moblogging has been a tool in my blogging arsenal, but I've never had a separate blog exclusively devoted to moblogging before. So this will be an interesting experiment.

Anyway, again, welcome!
